Urban Renewal
A lot of thought went into generating the signature treatment at The Spa Intercontinental Toronto Centre, a holistic-inspired therapy that combines a variety of services into one. Ancient modalities fuse with modern healing as you begin the journey face down, and inhaling deeply while a scented poultice—a small pouch filled with herbs and flowers like roses, lavender, chamomile and oranges—fragrantly fills the room. Hot stones are then anointed with grape seed and rose oils and placed on your back, arms and legs to melt away muscle tension like butter. Then you turn over, the process is repeated, and you receive a facial: makeup removal, cleanse, steam, exfoliation and mask, after which toner and serum is applied. Two skincare lines—Italy's bio-active Comfort zone and organic, biodynamic Jurlique from Australia—are both environmentally conscious and vegan-friendly. Along with formaldehyde-free nail polish lines like Spa Ritual, they denote to this spa's dedication to carrying the greenest products around.

Top Spas in Toronto
The Intercontinental Toronto Centre serves up The Spa in the heart of the city near the waterfront. The 8,000 square-foot spa features 10 treatment rooms, steam room, saline pool and unique Himalayan salt hot tub. On a warm day, you’ll love the views of the city and its iconic CN Tower seen from the tranquility of the spa’s outdoor terrace.

According to Donna Gil, the assistant spa manager, The Spa’s focus is on simplicity and getting back to nature. To that end they use natural product lines like Comfort Zone, Jurlique and Akhassa (the first spa in Toronto to carry this organic Thai line).

For a total indulgence, I opt for the Glorious Life Facial. While this treatment’s name would have you think it’s aimed at older women, Donna tells me that it’s targeted towards women in their 30s to use as preventative medicine. She also informs me that the treatment is supposed to extend the life of any Botox injections.

The Glorious Lift is an hour-long experience featuring Comfort Zone products. The intensive facial means that clients will see results immediately thanks to the cleansing and exfoliating products and mainly the glycolic peel that is incorporated. During the service you’ll also be treated to a hand and foot massage and moisturizing treatment and neck and scalp massage. After the treatment is finished I was really impressed when Donna asked if I wanted my therapist to retouch my make-up before I headed out.

The Business of Feeling Good
In the heart of downtown Toronto's business district lies an oasis (of sorts); a spa named aptly — “The Spa.” You’ll find it on the third floor of the tres chic InterContinental Toronto Centre hotel on Front Street.

Once inside, the outside life you once knew all but vanishes. The irony of this knocks you flat when you realize the only thing separating this paradise from that all drudgery below is some ornately shaped glass.

Launched just this past June, this 8,000 square foot retreat is open seven days a week, music to many a jet-setter’s ears. It’s no wonder that the place is a hot spot for business execs and celebrities, all pit-stopping for one-hour, three-hour or twenty-four shots of nirvana. While some of Toronto's denizens are known to drop by for a quick lunch (or tea), others will stay the entire day for the kind of pampering worthy of royalty.

In due course, everyone who comes here ends up looking and feeling like five million dollars.
